"HAPPY VOICES"

Page 107

There was a memorial service at Jason's house. Almost all of his family was there and some of his friends from school.

His mother Lisa and his father Mohamed were at the living room surrounded by their elder family members. Lisa had her face buried in her hands and was bawling her eyes out. Mohamed managed to maintain a straight face and was gazing up at the ceiling.

"Allah is Wakeel. Allah is Wakeel..." He kept repeating to himself.

The elder family members were rubbing Lisa's back as she wept, consoling her.

Christy was also seated at the living room couch, her head was buried in between her legs and she was crying her eyes out.

Her two school friends Violet and Roxanne as well as Shay was seated around her and hugging her head and shoulders.

"Christy it's gonna be alright!" Roxanne said as she was hugging Christy's head.

"You don't have to cry boo." Violet said as she also started weeping.

"Christy please! Everything's gonna be fine." Shay said as she tried to suppress her tears.

Mr. Bulk, Jason's old gym teacher was seated on the kitchen table, Staring into oblivion and slowly shaking his head from side to side.

Jerry, his childhood friend and schoolmate was crouched by the wall with his head covered in his legs. He didn't want his tears to be visible.

Mr. Keen. Jason and Jerry's old science teacher, saw Jerry as he was crouched down and he walked over to him and placed his hands on his shoulders.

"ALLAH IS SUFFICIENT!" Mohamed stood up and yelled out. The whole room could hear. Then tears started freely falling down his eyes and he started bawling like a hurt dog.

--------------------------------------------------

After about two hours of everyone crying and weeping. Jason's maternal aunt Savannah, told everybody to come to the living room where they would give the eulogy speech.

The lights were on as everybody crowded in the living room. The entire room was silent. The only sound that was audible was Lisa and Mohamed crying.

The first speaker was Cecilia. Jason's little ten year old sister. She walked to the front of the living room where the TV was at. Everyone turned towards her.

"When I was six in kindergarten Jason taught me the alphabet. Last year when I was nine me and him got into a spelling contest and I won. He looked at me in the eyes and told me that I'm the smartest girl in the world." She said and tears started falling from her eyes.

Lisa immediately ran up to her and hugged her. They both cried together.

The next speaker was Sebastian. Jason's old gym schoolmate in Mr. Bulk's class. He was a short white kid with red pimples in his face. He had on a plad tan shirt with green and black jeans.

"People would always clown and make fun of me because of my short height and pimples. One day I went in the bathroom stall and started crying. I wanted to kill myself and commit suicide. Jason walked in the bathroom and went in the stall next to where I was at. He said 'Hey Sebastian... I think you're the coolest kid in the world.'" Sebastian said and slowly walked back and sat down on one of the chairs.

Jerry then walked up. He had his head down. He slowly lifted it up when he came to the front. His cheeks were completely red.

"I fell down my bike when I was ten. I was really hurt and unable to get up and walk. Jason lifted me up and ran with me straight to the hospital. He stayed with me there for six hours while I got some stitches done on me." He said and bowed his head back down and walked to one of the chairs to sit down.

Roxanne was the next one who walked up.

"I would always chastise Christy for being with someone like Jason. All he ever did was smoke weed and act a fool. But ever since they got married, Christy was always happy and smiling. Christy's my sister. Which makes Jason my brother." She said and went and sat back down.

As the next speaker "Jahlisa" was walking up to the front to give her speech, Abdul waltzed in the door. Everyone turned to look at him. He quietly went and sat in the back of the room next to Mr. Keen.

"Jason was the most annoying boy I ever met." Jahlisa said.

Everyone turned back to fix their gaze on her.

"He was always making fun of me in gym class. But whenever he saw me outside of school he would always smile and wave at me. He even bought me ice cream once." Jahlisa said as she started bawling.

Roxanne ran up to her and gave her a hug. After she sat down, Abdul quietly walked up. The entire room was silent as they stared at him.

"JASON WAS CLOSER TO ME THAN ALL OF YOU!" He simply said.

There was a moment of silence. Even Lisa and Mohamed weren't crying anymore.

"Religious bond is stronger than ties of kinship. Me and Jason would often go to the Masjid, and we prayed in Jammah/congregation together. He would always stand next to me. He was the best Muslim I've ever met, far better than me. And he was also my friend. There's no doubt in my mind that he is in Jannah/heaven." Abdul simply said then he walked out the front door.
