“The first row will go first, all of you guys come line up in front of me.” Mr. Bulk said. Everybody in the front row slowly got up from the cold gym floor and lined up in front of Mr. Bulk. As they were standing some of them was stretching their arms and biceps getting ready to do the push-ups Mr. Bulk wanted.
Mr. Bulk grabbed a chair from the corner on the other side of the gym and sat down on it as he pulled out his clipboard and clicked his pen and got ready to mark the number of pushups everybody is able to do. Shawn began to jump up and down as he was prepping to do the pushups. Everybody starred at him and began to snicker silently, including me, I thought he looked very silly jumping up and down looking like a kangaroo on some type of drug. There was 5 people in each rows, five rows and five people in each row. The first person stepped forward to do the push-ups. I could not hear what Mr. Bulk was saying, considering the fact he was on the other side of the gym. I could only see his lips moving as he was talking to the first person who came up to do the pushups. It was a boy named Sebastian, he was very quiet in the class, he didn’t really say much. Sebastian nodded his head in reply to what Mr. Bulk was saying. Mr. Bulk was most likely letting Sebastian know all the rules and regulations for the pushups.
Sebastian later dropped to the gym floor and began to do pushups. I was counting silently in my head as he was doing them. It looked as if he was going to do them all with no problem, it looked fairly easy and unchallenging for him. 7-8-9-10-11-… There was no stopping Sebastian, he was going all the way. 14-15… Then he stopped in midair. All eyes were fixed on him, nobody knew what was going on, why had he stopped? Sebastian began to grunt loudly and his forearms began to tremble tremendously. Sebastian was tired! I began to think to myself that he only had a little bit more to do before he finished, it would be a shame for him to fail now after he got so close. “COME ON BASH! YOU CAN DO IT BRO!” I loudly exclaimed to Sebastian so he could hear me, then I began to clap my hands as I cheered on Sebastian. Even though I didn’t know Sebastian very well due to the fact he was so shy and quiet and never talked to nobody, even when somebody tried to talk to him in the gym class he would reply with a weak comment or just give a silent grunt with a nod of his head. I admired determination though and preservation. Sebastian really wanted to do well with the pushups and was trying really hard, his effort was admirable indeed.
I stood up and began to clap louder as I continued to cheer the shy silent boy Sebastian. The whole class turned its head from Sebastian and looked up at me as I was standing. A few people chuckled at me standing up and clapping. As some kids still continued to chuckle at me, some of them were beginning to stand up and clap and chant Sebastian’s name. Their chants and claps easily drowned mines out. Before I knew it 75% of the entire kids in the class were standing and chanting Sebastian’s name and clapping and praising him on.
16-17-18. “GOO SEBASTIAN!” A girl from the same group as Sebastian yelled out. I could not believe what was going on. Nobody in the class really knew Sebastian. Often times he would dress extremely carefully to school and kids would laugh at his shoes and shirt. Now those same kids were cheering on Sebastian.
“WHOO! YOU GO BOY.” Another random girl shouted out, I could not figure who she was though. The many claps and chants were disturbing my sense to hear greatly. Quite honestly I didn’t believe that Sebastian was going to be able to finish with the 20 pushups, his arms was trembling quite extremely and he was breathing really hard and one could clearly tell he was struggling greatly. Wow, were 20 pushups really that bad? I started thinking back during football practice on all the times that the coach made us run many laps around the field for not being able to do 70 pushups. If even one person was not able to finish the coach would make the whole team run, rather than just that one person that could not finish. The coach did this for two reasons, the first was because he believed all of us to be brothers and we all should be treated equally, the second reason was that more pressure would be put on everybody in the team individually because nobody wanted to be the one that made everybody run more than they had to, so in return they will put more effort towards finishing the pushups for fear of being chastised and harassed by the other teammates.
19!! 19 ½.
Sebastian then dropped with a thud on the floor as he was coming up to finish the half pushup he needed to do to finish.
