Chapter 8

I didn’t hang up, I just turned the phone upside down and laid it on the bed, after about a minute or two I picked up the phone to check if she was still on the line, I couldn’t hear her breathing, I couldn’t hear her voice, all I could hear was… nothing. But the line was still on, she had not hung up either. I started thinking that maybe I should end the call and call her back. I clicked “End Call”, and I was getting ready to call her back, then the doorbell began to ring. It rang thrice the first time, we had a pretty loud doorbell, so I’m sure that it had woken everybody up and alerted them just as it had done to me. I quickly jumped out of my bed and started to run downstairs.

Cynthia was standing by the door, she was laughing. I couldn’t see who was on the other side of the door, my little sister was blocking the view. But I already knew who it was.

“MERRY JERRY!” I bellowed to my friend. “Come to my room bruh.” I said again.

I turned around and began walking back upstairs, I could hear my friend walking behind me. Jerry had been to my house many times before, so he knew exactly where my room was at, I didn’t have to direct him or anything.

I walked in my room and sat down on the chair close to my desktop computer, and I began to remove my shirt and the pants that I was wearing. Jerry came and slouched on the bed. He laid his head down and pulled out his iPhone from his pocket and began doing something on it.

I grabbed the towel and wrapped it around my waist. “Lemme just hop in the shower right quick and we out.” I said to Jerry.

He didn’t look at me, he just laid there and kept playing with his phone. “Hurry up bruh.” Jerry replied to me.

I walked out of my bedroom and began to walk to the bathroom close to my little sister’s room. I walked in the bathroom, then I took off my towel and put it on top of the toilet seat. I then walked over to the sink in the bathroom. I had to brush my teeth first. I looked in the mirror before I began. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, I definitely had to get my haircut today. I think I’ll get it before I go over to Christy’s house, so that I can look good for her.

After about 15 minutes I walked out of the bathroom. I had to take a quick shower. I knew Jerry was waiting for me, and I don’t like to keep people waiting on me. While I was walking out of the hallway going into my room from the bathroom, I heard my little sister’s door closing. Either she was just walking in her room or she had just come out. I didn’t care, I just had to get out of the hallway and go into my room, I was so cold.

As soon as I walked in my room the warm air hit me on the face and covered my entire body. I was so relieved. I hurried up and went to my closet to find some clothes to wear so that me and Jerry...

Jerry. He wasn’t in the room. Where was my friend at? I had left him in the room when I went to take a shower. He maybe just went to the downstairs bathroom, or the kitchen to get something to eat. My house was like Jerry’s second home. He had been there so many times before, everybody in the household was familiar with him and liked him, and they all loved and laughed at his childish sense of humor, even Cynthia, and she never laughed at anything.

I grabbed the boot cut jeans that my mom had purchased for me a few weeks ago. After I put on the jeans I grabbed the deodorant from my desktop and I applied it to my armpits. I never forgot to put on deodorant, every time that I took a shower I would put it on. I may forget to do my homework, I may forget the name of a girl, but I will NEVER forget to apply deodorant. I loved to smell good, and I loved to look nice. Even when I was at home in my room and not going anywhere, I took very great care of my appearance. That was another habit that I picked up from my father. So many times when I was younger I would watch and notice my father, me and him would be at home, not going anywhere, and my father would go to the bathroom to take a full body shower, and apply deodorant and cologne, just so that he can sit in the house and watch TV with me.

As I was applying the deodorant, my friend walked in the room. Jerry was panting heavily, there was a disappointed look on his face as he came in, he looked as if he had just run a race on a football field, and he lost.

“What you got in a fight with the toilet?” I asked him. I wanted to know if my friend had got into a fist fight or some type of physical altercation with the bathroom toilet, I only asked because my friend looked as if he was out of breath and was about to die.

He didn’t answer the question, he just headed for the bed and sat down.

“You ready?” He asked me.

“Yeah, we out!” I replied to my friend.

I finished putting on deodorant and grabbed my shirt and my all black hoodie out of my closet and put it on. Even though it was late Spring, and the days were warm and temperate. The mornings were still pretty harsh at times, they still had a bit of cold from the winter months that had just passed.

I put my shirt and hoodie on, and walked out my bedroom door with my friend.

Both of us walked downstairs, I headed for the kitchen before I walked out the front door with Jerry. I had to eat something, even a little bit, before I left the house. Plus, some friends at school was telling me that it’s not healthy to smoke if you have an empty stomach. I took two slices of potato bread that was in the fridge, and then I put the bread in the white toaster on the counter-top.

Then I remembered, I almost forgot. I quickly ran upstairs and went in the pockets of the pants that I had taken off, and I pulled out the $50 bill that my father had given me last night, I had to get my haircut today. That was my main objective, I had to get it because I had to look good for Christy when I go over her house later on today. Then I ran back downstairs. My friend was still seated on the couch. He had his earphones plugged in and was listening to music from his Iphone. He had the volume all the way up, and by the sound of the heavy beat that was coming from his earphones I could tell that he was listening to Trap Music. “Trap Music” is a Hip-Hop genre, in which the beat from the music consists of a lot of different instruments, mainly heavy kicks and claps.

The two bread that was in the toaster had popped out by the time that I came back to the kitchen. I took the Peanut Butter that was in the fridge out and laid it on top of the counter next to the fridge. I was going to make peanut butter and bread for breakfast. I absolutely loved peanut butter. I could eat a whole cup full by itself, especially the crunchy kind, those were my favorite.

“You want some bruh?” I asked Jerry as I took the top from the peanut butter off and took some out with a spoon and began to spread it on one of the toasts.

Jerry didn’t respond. I couldn’t see him, as my eyes were still focused on the bread and peanut butter. But from the blaring sound of the music that was coming from his direction, I knew he still had his earphones in and he couldn’t hear a word that I was saying. I decided to just leave the matter alone, he might not even be hungry, if he was then he would’ve came in the kitchen and made something, this house was his as well as mines. I grabbed the two toasts and a water bottle and I began to head out the front door with my friend.

We lived at a house, not an apartment, so we didn’t have steps to get out the front door. It was just a straight path out, the only thing that was there was a whitish gray doormat. Which was now turning brown and black because many people stepped on it as they were going out and entering into the house.

Me and my friend began walking at a certain direction, I didn’t know in which way we were going, but I suspected that was the way to Joe’s house. Jerry still had his earphones in as he was walking, he didn’t say anything. I decided to break the silence.

YO!” I said, as I snapped my fingers at his face to wake him up from the daze he was in. He removed his earphones and stared at me.

Wassup?” He said as he lookeed at me.

I started to walk slower, this was something that I had to really tell my friend, and I wanted him to give me advice on it.

Me and Christy talked last night, I called her.” I said to my friend.

Jerry started to walk slower as well, so that he can match my pace. He turned his head and looked at me. “Did you hit?” He asked me. My friend was asking me if I had intercourse with Christy already.

I scrunched up my face. “What?” I asked him. “Bro, what are you on?” I asked him.

“If you ain’t hit yet then I don’t wanna hear nothing about how ya’ll was boo loving on the phone.” Jerry said to me.

I looked at my friend and gave a half laugh. “Bruh… I’m gonna marry her.” I finally said to him.

Jerry stopped walking and looked at me, he crunched up his face. “You’re gonna… marry her? Is that what you just said?” Jerry asked me.

I stopped and faced my friend. “Uhh… yeah.” I told him.

Jerry looked at me for a few seconds with a blank expression on his face, and then he lifted his left arm up and smacked the back of my head lightly.

I fell back a little bit as I tried to dodge his smack. “What you do that for? You high?” I asked my friend. I wanted to know the reason as to why Jerry felt the need to smack me on the back of my head, the only explanation was that he must’ve been heavily intoxicated.

Jerry looked at me with a serious expression on his face. “Naw, you probably is though, listen to what you’re saying. You’re gonna… ‘marry Christy’?” He said to me.

“How is you gon marry her and you didn’t even eat her butt yet?” Jerry said to me while smiling.

I fell back in laughter. “Bruhh, I’m not gon do that!” I said to him while still laughing.

“The oldhead talked to me last night and told me that if I really like her then I should marry her, I’ma go to her house today and talk to her about it.” I told my friend.

Jerry started walking at his regular pace again. As he was walking he looked at me as I was talking, he knew that I was serious about doing this.

“You gon ask her to marry you before or after you eat her butt?” Jerry asked me with a straight face.

I stopped walking and almost fell down in laughter. I gripped my stomach, I dropped the two pieces of toast that I was holding, the only thing I held onto was the bottle of water.

“Brruuhh!” I said while laughing. “IM NOT EATING HER BUTT!” I bellowed to my friend. Then I kept walking again and matched his pace.

I stopped laughing, regained my composure and said to him with a straight face “Bro, I love her.”

Jerry stopped walking, crunched up his face, I thought he was getting ready to smack me again, I held my fists up and braced myself.

“You dumb!” He said, and then he kept walking again.

“How?” I asked him.

“You don’t even know what love is bro.” Jerry said to me.
